As a previous to the receipt of your letter I had directions from the late accountant concerning [undecipherable] Edwin Harris, which on his arrival here have to be attended to. The late accountant also directed me to report to him the objects to which surplus monies arising in my hands might in future be applied. It will be difficult for me to define the objects to which such monies will be applied — the demands for it generally [undecipherable] from fortuitous circumstances, and the appropriation is made as they occur. There is however commonly as many demands as can be satisfied — the multiplied statement which [undecipherable] made to the commander in chief, and since having made fresh advances for the recruiting, as was done by Captain DeButs, that many [undecipherable] will be drawn out of my hands to enable the quarter master general department to furnish the necessary transportation from the Ohio to this place, between [undecipherable] line and the [undecipherable] of the treaty.
