John Polhemus
Sir
Major Craig has sent to this Office a number of receipts for payments made by you to the Garrison at Fort Franklin to exonerate you from the charges on the books of this Office against you for sums advanced him for that purpose — an examination of them have taken place and such men as paid by you appear to your credit — I find that small sums remain unpaid which I have directed Major Craig to receive from you giving you duplicate receipts thereof, and in future in all such cases you will pay any balance which may remain in your hands to him and transmitting his receipt with the others that it may appear how each advance made by him has been appropriated — you will in future receive of Mr Craig a printed receipt blank in which you are to insert the name of each man you pay, and when any of them remain unpaid you will make a list opposite their names the reason — This regulation has taken place to facilitate as much as possible the trouble of paying your men and hope that it will answer the end — I have to observe that strickt attention should be paid in making out the Muster rolls, and remarks that in any degree affect the pay of the men should be noted — I have sent to Major Craig a list of the monies remaining in your hands to be paid to him as before directed —
I am Sir yc
