Isaac Craig Esq^r D. of War Accountant Pittsburg May Sir I have to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 18^th Ulto with its enclosures, the Major Hewes Account shall be put under examination and settled as directed. — I have to inform you an examination of your Account Current has taken place and the several sums paid by you placed to credit some errors have taken place in your pay which I hope in future will be avoided as much as possible as it very much retards the settlement of your Accounts having frequently to wait untill the returns of the Men come forwards before they can be entered to your Credit. The greatest attention is necessary in paring the muster with the pay rolls, taking Notice the remarks in the Muster rolls, and meeting the pay roll when Officers have monies remaining in their hands after paying the Men present. I have directed them to pay it to you taking your receipt the same in order that such sum advanced be balanced by the receipts produced — this regulation enable me to balance their accounts by charging you the sum received — you will receive herewith agreeably to request Blank Muster and Pay Rolls of Detachments I have also sent you by this opportunity printed receipt bills for the use of the Officers to whom you advance Money for the pay of their men, delivering to each a receipt roll with the pay roll, this regulation is entered into that they may as little trouble as possible in the paying their Men. Herewith you will receive a Statement of the monies due from each Officer which you will receive as above directed I am &c. &c. — William Simmons P.S. I have been informed by the Auditor that you have inserted sundry charges in your Accounts as Quartermaster to be settled at the Treasury which come properly under the notice of this Department such as apprehending Deserters &c.
