You having received from this department the sum of 2285 dollars being for the pay &c of sundry detachments of Kentucky Militia flat herewith for their services in the Years 1792, 3. 4. and 1795 you are held accountable for the due Application thereof conformably to the Receipt roll you are in possession of—
In making the payments you will please to have in view the Acts of Congress passed 8th May 1792. which enacts that no Assignment of Pay after 1st June in that year by a Non Commissioned Officer or private shall be valid. If some of the claimants should not be able to come forward, in such cases if Application is made by a power of Attorney it ought to express that the money is to be received for the use of the Soldier and to be properly acknowledged— In taking the receipts you are to observe that where the signature is not written it is to be witnessed by a respectable evidence which receipts are to be deposited in this Office for your examination and the balance if any remains due to the United States is to be refunded to the Treasurers of the United States— It is expected you will execute this business with the utmost accuracy and dispatch.—
