[Letter from Caleb Gibbs — April 25, 1795] Samuel Hodgdon Ltⁿ Philadelphia Boston April 25^th 1795 Sir, Your Letter of the 15. Inst. with its inclosure I have received. I am extremely sorry that your form for keeping the accounts of the Frigate had not been forwarded at an earlier period, as I had provided myself with Books &^c according to my ideas, as also the Gentleman who acts as Clerk of the navy yard at Portsmouth, we pursued nearly one and the same plan. Viz. 1 waste. 1 Ledger. 1 Book for receipts and deliveries. 1 duplicate receipt book to Justify the voucher. 1 Letter Book all of which except the latter, and receipt book, with I fear prove useless. the forms of two of the Books are inclosed. the Waste and Ledger I had ruled differently from the general method of ruling Books of that discription. I must endeavour to get the Stationer to take them again upon the best Terms I can and shall transmit his account as soon as I can prpep it. I believe it was not your intention to have sent me so large a packet on public service without without being Franked. M^r Hastings the Post master here demands 50 cents for the letter.
