West Point, April 9th 1795.
Sir,
Your favor of the 23 ultimo I have received, with the four thousand dollars, receipted to Coll Fish for subsistency. I got this money brought here without any expence to the Public — such opportunities seldom happen. The hurry of business in your department occasionally receiving the money so long after I requested to have it sent, that it will considerably thin of what I am indebted to persons for the Public. I have mentioned to the honorable the Secretary of War, that Mr Joseph Howell, who is now setting out for your city, would present a good opportunity to send to me two thousand two hundred of 74 dollars 3/4 cents — the amount of an estimate passed to Coll Pickering for the repairs of the barracks & storehouses here. I am now paying out the money I received from Coll Fish — very shortly I will send you a package of vouchers. As I have received from the Public and paid out for them considerable money, I would be happy to have a settlement of accounts as soon as you can make it convenient.
I am, with great respect,
Sir,
Your most obedient
Humble servant,
Geo Fleming
Joseph Howell Esquire —
