[Joseph Howell Esq^r Accountants Office Philadelphia] [Postmark] [Docket: March 31^st 1795 / from Cap^t [undecipherable] Martin / [2^d?] Sub-Legion / and [undecipherable]] Carlisle March 31^st 1795 Sir I [undecipherable] Letter Enclosing my Pay Bill [undecipherable] [undecipherable] and find there is no pay for [undecipherable] Thomas [undecipherable] be pleased to let me know the Reason as this Man has never Drawn any Pay since he has been at this Post his time will expire the [last?] Month and should he be discharged without [Receaving?] pay he must certainly suffer as he is unable to get his living in any employment, he has been a [good?] Soldier and [undecipherable] [undecipherable] by his Discharge that he served with Credit last War, he deserves some little attention to be [paid?] to him, I beg leave to recommend him to your Notice, and hope something may be done for him: There is some little Mistake in the Pay Role relative to the Pay of Thomas Gregg he is Marked in the Roll Enlisted 17 of December and there appears but fifty [undecipherable] into Pay for him, Also in my Pay, there being Pay Due me for the Month of April and part of May to the date of my Acceptance, I having received my Pay from Major Butler, to the 31 of March, 1794 Capt [Sprole?] had [pointed?] out the same Mistake formerly and in your letter dated Sept 6^th 1794, you had promised it should be [undecipherable] in the next Pay, for his Recruits 150 Sir While Writing this Letter I have Received Yours under Cover, from the Secretary of War with an order to Discharge Old Stevenson, wich I have done Accordingly you desire to be informed relative to his Name, he says he Inlisted with Capt Slough at Lancaster in the Month of April 1792, and was left by him to recruit with Lieut Robert Thompson and received his Pay he thinks up to June or July 1793 from M^r Thompson: he was left sick at Lancaster when that Gentleman marched for the Westward, and came to this Post with Ensign Levi M^cClean in May 179[undecipherable: probable reading 4] but did never receive any Pay since that he received from M^r Thompson, that is his Name is Alexander Stevenson and he never went by any other, but there was a Certain Alexander Kennedy a fifer that went out with M^r M^cClean belonging to Capt Uriel [Sprigs?] Company I well know myself [undecipherable] the mistake might proceed from [there?] I imagine there must be some mistake relative to his Pay as I have heard nothing of it from General Miller, I am Sir your most Ob^t humb^le Servt [signature] Martin Joseph Howell Esq^r
