[From Geo. Fleming March 11. 1795. Inspector Callian Mor Scott —] West Point, March 11^th 1795. Sir, Cap^t. W^m. Scott returned from the northward a few days since. He informed me yesterday morning he intended to set out this day for your city, having been disappointed of receiving money from his agent. I beg leave to enclose you the account he gave me with his receipt at foot of it for his salary, amounting to 5⁷ dollars and 33 cents. If there is a feasibility of your retaining the amount of it in your hands for me, with the remaining balance of 2⁷ dollars & 22 cents he is indebted to me on the note of hand he gave me for 85 dollars & 15 cents, (mentioned in my letter of the 9^th ultimo,) together with five dollars more he acknowledges to be indebted to me, which were not posted up at the time he gave me his said note, and will be so good as to befriend me in this business, I shall consider myself under a particular obligation to you. I endorsed on his said note the circumstance of his delivering to me his account for salary with a receipt on it, and added, "Which account & receipt I will acknowledge to be in part of the within note, when the Accountant to the War department gives me credit for the same." He says he means to return to this place to pay other debts he owes here, and wishes me to keep in my hands his said note, until he produces me on his return a memorandum from you of his having paid it. — I am in inexpressible want of the money, (four thousand dollars,) I requested in my letter dated the 3^d of January last to be sent to me for contingent expences. — My last letter was dated the 21^st of January last. — I am, with great respect, Sir, Your most obedient & humble servant, Geo.
