[Copy of a letter from the Secretary of War, to Mr Dayton, dated February 28. 1795.]
[Copy]
Copy of a letter from the Secretary of War, to Mr Wm Dayton, dated February 28. 1795.
Sir.
Your Brother called yesterday and read a passage in a letter from you, which induces me to think that Mr Woodruff did not give you an entire copy of the questions and my answers, relative to the pay of the Jersey Militia, which were proposed and given on the 13th instant. They are now inclosed. I meant to leave it to your discretion to determine what compensation should be allowed the Paymasters or other Agents who should actually pay the Militia. I expected that the Paymasters would give notice to the Officers of their Regiments, to assemble their men by Companies, or parts of Companies, at the most convenient places in succession, to facilitate the payments, without putting the Officers or Men, to the trouble of going far from home. You will order this matter as your prudence shall dictate.
