[Samuel Hodgdon Esqr Philadelphia]
Pittsburg 2d January 1795.
Sir
Your Letter of the 26th Instant is this moment Come to hand with a Statement of my Dr & Account inclosed which I have not time at Present to examine minutely it being now 10 O'clock P.M at the posts arrived & the Mail is to Close at eleven — I can however see at first glance that there is one Charge of $00 Dollars 5th of March 1794 which ought not to have been placed to Colo O'Haras Credit, as it was manifestly paid me on Account of a Considerable ballance due on former Transactions in Qr Mr Dept during your administration, the other Charges it is Probable are all right. the statement being made in haste at closing of my Letter, the Error was shortly after discovered but to Late as the Statement had gone forward —
But notwithstanding you have discovered the ballance not to be so great as it first appear'd, I can see no reason why a part of it might not have been transmitted to me. can I see any propriety in reducing me to a necessity of borrowing money to be applyd to payment of of the accounts of the United States, part of the money put into my hands for Pay of the troops at the upper posts, has been inavoidably applyd to Qr Mr Dept, this money I shall in a few days be calld upon.
I am with esteem —
Sir your Obedient —
Huml Servant
