R.P.O 401310.] Pittsburg 21^th January 1793 Dear Sir — On the 21^st Instant two Waggons arrived with clothing that had sometime been deposited at Carlisle, these waggoners having had bad roads and bad weather to encounter Occasioned a Considerable delay and not being furnished with money sufficient to enable them to return I was under a necessity of advancing forty Dollars to James Dunbar who drove a Team the property of John Parker of Carlisle, who will no doubt call on you to settle his Carriage Account, at which time please to deduct that Sum from his Account and pass it to my credit. — A Simeilar case occured on the 12^th Instant with respect to Robert Armor Waggoner to whom I advanced ten Dollars which was noted on his receipt for that Sum also please to pass to my credit I find my self under a necessity of drawing on you in favour of Mathew Ernest for three Hundred and Seventy five Dollars at ten days Sight that Sum be pleased to pay and charge as formerly. I am now endeavouring to complete my transactions to the end of last year I find my disbursements since the 1^st January 1791 Amount to Doll 41,845. And amount of acco^ts not yet Settled say 1,745 Total am^t Doll 43,590= And I have rec^d of You and Col O'Hara by remittances and Drafts Doll 31,993., But a more accurate Statement shall be transmitted by next Post, However You will see that a considerable Ballance is yet in my favour, which I am under a necessity of calling on you for and have to request you to make the necessary application at the Treasury — The late Secretary of war whom I Shall ever most cordially esteem by his [underline: Letter] of the 20 Ultimo informed me that agreeable to my recommendation Maj^r Kirkpatrick is appointed principal Commissary for the lower post of the Ohio & I am appointed for Pittsburg and that my Compensations would be designated on the Saturday following this has not been done, I suppose owing to Gen^l Knox's returning from Office, I now find by Maj Kirkpatrick instructions recev^d by this days mail that the business at Pittsburg is to be done by a Deputy whose Compensation is not yet pointed out & that this deputy is to have the charge of both of receiving and issuing without an assistant if this is in reality the case the favour intended me will not be so great as I expected, it would have been Satisfactory to have known wither this Offer of recommending me as a deputy to the present Principal was in Order to increase my duties & responsibility or my emoluments or both, I am, Dear Sir Your Obed^t Servant [undecipherable] [undecipherable: Billng?] Sam^d Hodgdon Esq^r Philadelphia
