[N^o 83] [From Major General Knox Secretary of War] War Office Decem^r 1794 Sir As difficulties have arisen and will continue in Settling at this place the accts of Officers not having been made up for pay in the Rolls by the Paymaster and which is owing principally to the Subordinate paymasters not having Settled their accts I have to request that you would be pleased to issue a general order Commanding all the Subordinate paymasters immediately to make up their accts and Vouchers to be transmitted to the accountant of the War Department for Settlement and that for Subsequent advances in future they Settle their accts as Soon as possible as well as all other persons having public money to account for. In order to facilitate the buisness I would propose that by a certain [strikethrough: day] allowing more time to distant Posts each Paymaster Should deposit his accts and Vouchers with the Paymaster of the Troops who Shall be charged to give descriptive receipts for the Same and transmit them to the acct[undecipherable] I have the honor to be Sir Your very Hum^ble Serv^t Major Gen^l Anthony Wayne H Knox [N^o [undecipherable] From Major General Knox Secretary of War] Sir War Department March 31^st 1794 The last letter which I had the honor to address to you was dated the 7^th of December a duplicate whereof is herein enclosed. The interruption of the Communication by the Ohio during the Winter and having no Special matter requiring an answer by that time have prevented my writing you since that time. I shall now reply to your Several favors which have with their respective enclosures been received & submitted to the President of the United States. These were dated on the 15^th of November 4^th December 18^th & January last. Under the circumstances which
