Letter from Doctor Brown - 26 Novemr 1794 Recd 11th Feby 1795 Green Ville November 26th 1794 Dr. Sir, I have again returned from campaigning with the roof of my head on The Genl. refuses telling me go till ordered from the war office, he sayes he cannot spare one; I think however he will soon receive that order, for their is no use for me here in the line of my possession, although he finds me business enough other wayes. In a letter to you last summer I requested you to send me some Coffee & Sugar, also to inform me who I should pay your money to, may I repet this request if you find that I am not to be recaled; I know not when I shall be able to pay you for all this trouble but I assure you that I possess the disposition. The old Genl. has ordered me a house one hundred & fifty yards from any living soul and has men now employed fencing in a large space of ground for me to garden, this he thinks will be sufficient trap to prevent one day asking to be recaled; but I assure I am tired of the woods, for no officer or soldier of the legion has been so long in them at once as I have is is now sixteen months since I saw Cincinnati or any other house except soldier or Indian huts or garrisons.
I will thank you to inform me as soon as possible whether I am to be ordered to Philadelphia or not that I may regulate matters accordingly. Captain Price will deliver you any news we have. Please to remember me as usual & believe me to be with much respect & esteem Dr. Sir, Your humble Servant C Brown Surgeon Artillerists & Engineers Colonel Samuel Hodgdon

Description

Last summer Dr. Brown asked Hodgdon to send him coffee and sugar and he repeats that request with a promise to pay for it when he is able to do so. At Greenville he has been given a house and enough ground to allow him to plant a garden. He wants to be informed if he is soon to be ordered to Philadelphia so he can prepare for the move.
