[undecipherable] 22. 1794. / [undecipherable] / The account Enclos'd was delivered to the Accountant of the War Department Jan 2 1795 / also Rec^d] Sir, Richmond Nov. 22. 1794 Enclosed you will receive Copies of two letters I have rec^d from the Secretary of the Treasury dated the 12^th June & 19^th Aug^t last. The first was written without any previous communication from me on the Subject it relates to — the latter was in consequence of one I wrote for the purpose of obtaining an explanation of the extent to which he intended the application of the compensation of 1 p Ct: on my particular agencies under his & your directions. Agreeably to his advice in the letter of the 19^th Aug^t I also now enclose my Account of monies Rec^d & disbursed under your direction from the 16^th April 1792 to 18^th August 1794, with a debit of 1 p Ct: commission thereon; I beg leave to refer the allowance to your decision. You know well that it has never been my practice to be over solicitous on the Score of Compensation for extra Services rendered the public, nor am I backward to receive such as can with propriety be allowed. Upon the Services now concerned I shall make no comment, but that [undecipherable] appears naturally to ground a claim for compensation, as I am held in a State of responsibility on the public Books of your department, upon my rect^s to the Treasurer on your Warrants for the Same, from time to time, sent to my hands, from which I can not be [undecipherable: exonerated?] but by a transmission of Vouchers to be obtained, often, from persons Situated far from me. for the same reason the Agency is of value to your department, I am very respectfully [Gen^l Knox] Your Mo^st Ob^t D Carrington
