Seneca War Chief Little Billy -- Character & Annuity
Document 1794Pickering states that Little Billy, the Seneca chief, is a good friend of the United States, and that he has promised the chief an annuity of $50 to keep his allegiance. Hopes this meets Knox's approval. Vouches for the chief's character, and says he is of great influence with the Seneca, which justifies Pickering's promise to him.
Little Billey Canady. Novr. 15 1794 Sir In consideration of the good character and abilities of the Seneka War Chief Jishkasaga, usually called Little Billy, and of his strong friendship and attachment to the United States, and depending on the continuance of that friendship and attachment, I have promised him an annuitty of fifty dollars during his life. This my engagment on behalf of the United States, I hope will meet with your approbation. Little Billy Little Billy is a steady, prudent and judicious man; and as such of great influence in his nation. Without rewarding merit, Charity would plead strongly in his favour, as he has had the misfortune to lose his sight to such a degree as to be disabled from getting his livelihood by hunting.
