Sir,
I have the honor to enclose to you a copy of a letter this day recd from the Supervisor of Maryland relative to the Expence of a Guard at the Goal of Hagar's town. As I conceive the object to be without the sphere of this department, I place it under your view. It is pos sible it may appear to be rather appurtenant to the Department of State. If it be deemed the best mode, I shall be ready to require of the Contractor to furnish the supply. You will be pleased to inform me if any other mode of instructing him shall be adopted.
