Stagg Chief Clerk in the War Department] War Department October 4, 1794 — Sir The Secretary of the Treasury who performed during the absence of the Secretary of War the duties of his Office having gone with the President to Carlisle I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letters of the 27^th July 14 & 28^th of August. These letters have been submitted to the President and the publication of the two last with their respective enclosures was directed. You will readily perceive Sir in your letter of the 14^th published in the News papers that the part which mentions M^r Freemans devotion has been omitted, this I was directed to do as a few days previous to the receipt of your dispatches this person came to this Office and requested some pecuniary assistance to enable him to return home — alledging that he had been captured by three Indians on the first day of August as he was returning from an advanced party of the Army who were making a road to the main body, and carried to Roche de Bout and from thence to Niagara from whence he was permitted to return home — twenty dollars were advanced him & he left Philadelphia on the 24^th Ultimo in the Stage for Carlisle — I have written to Major Craig and informed him in Confidence of all the particulars respecting this man and requested he would in case he should arrive at Pittsburg take measures for apprehending him and sending him down to Fort Washington in order to be conveyed from thence to the Head Quarters of the Legion. The Secretary of War is on his way from Boston and will arrive here in the course of four or five days — Your Express will be detained till his arrival — I have the honor to be with the highest respect Sir Your Most Ob^t.
