Bridgewater State of Massachusets August the 1794 Having received a letter from the Honorable General Knox informing me of my being appointed by the President of the United States to the Superintending of the Public armory to be established at Springfield, and desireing that I accept the appointment to repair immediately to that place to take instructions from you also to inform him whether I might the appointment or not Which appointment I have accepted and on Receiving his letter immediately go to Springfield & write him an ansr to it, Expecting to have had orders from you what to due — But as there was no orders for me at that place nor any thing for me to due till I received them from You — wrote to General Knox praying him that you would be pleased to send on my orders at the Post Office in Boston and having wait and sent to the Office a number of times and receiving no answer (not knowing but General Knox's absence at the Office might be the reason) have left it should be thought I was inattentive to the Public business — wrote to inform you that I only waite your Orders at the Boston post Office — and will as soon as you Shall be pleased to favor me with them immediately repare to Springfield — and Use the best of my endeavors, that they are attended to with fidelity and dispatch — I am Sir with Sentiments of respect and Esteem your most obedient friend and humble Servant David Ames Major Samuel Hodgdon
