I have directed fifteen Brass Six pounders, with travelling carriages, and ten three pounders with-out carriages, to be transported from the Arsenal at Springfield to this city. The latter must be mounted as fast as possible, and implements for the whole provided, with all dispatch. One hundred rounds of fixed ammunition (seventy five Round and Twenty five Case Shot) with tubes, and a proportional quantity of portfires, must be prepared for each piece, and the whole provided with tumbrels, harness, and every other apparatus, to move at a moments warning — — Six travelling forges to be also provided. You will have, instantly, Six of the 5½ inch howitzers mounted, with implements, shells, and one hundred rounds (Seventy five shells and twenty ^five Grape) to each piece — Also, to be provided with Tumbrels or Ammunition waggons, complete. — You will have prepared, Camp Equipage and axes, for an army of twelve Thousand men — Tents are on hand — I have ordered one hundred thousand musket cartridges transported from West Point to this place. place — You will take measures for having made up immediately, five hundred thousand, in addition thereto, of the best powder; and of the calibre of the french arms. For such articles, as are not in the public stores here, or which may not be brought here with certainty in the course of thirty days, you will make estimates thereof, and present them to the Secretary of the Treasury; and requesting to know, how they are to be provided, informing him at the same time, that the measure is according to my directions — Sir, Respectfully, Your obed^t.
