Major Craig informs Secretary Knox of popular hostility and Whiskey Rebellion
Document 1794Major Craig notes that a number of insurgents were marching, with a design of attacking the Fort. They backed down and postponed the attack upon realizing that every possible means had been adopted for its defense. Major Craig informs the Secretary at War that General Neville, General Gibson, Major Kirkpatrick, and himself are under proscription, and have been told to leave Pittsburgh by the insurgents. Craig notes that every possible pain has been taken to protect the property and support the honor of the arms of the United States. Craig states that the messenger, Edward OHara, is carrying this letter on foot so as not to draw the attention of the locals.
