War department July 25. 1794 Sir, I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letters from La Boeuf dated the 26 ultimo and from Canandarqua dated the 9 instant. It would appear Sir that you have endeavored to the utmost of your power to avert the Storm and your exertions are noticed with pleasure Your ideas of a Conference are adopted. This is to be held at Canandarqua the 8 of September. Colonel Pickering will be the Commissioner to be assisted by you in all respects You are therefore immediately to notify the Six Nations of Indians that their father the President of the United States is deeply concerned to hear of any dissatisfaction existing in their minds against the United States and therefore invites them to a conference to be held at Canandarqua the eighth day of September next ensuing for the purpose of amicably removing all causes of misunderstanding and establishing permanent peace and friendship between the United States and the Six Nations. I hope Colonel Pickering will be able to be with you on the 8. but his great arrangements of the post office being to be made about the first of the Month it is doubtful whether he will be punctual to the time affixed. But if the Indians should be assembled you will endeavor to render them as tranquil as possible until his arrival. You will be particularly instructed upon all points which may probably arise at the conference. As to any Quakers attending we have no command over them, but it may be mentioned to them. Colonel Pickering will have a quantity of goods to distribute. These will be forwarded by the way of Albany. You will make arrangements for an adequate supply of provisions and suitable accommodations which it has been conceived to be more abundant at Canandarqua than elsewhere in the Vicinity.
