Gentlemen, [seal] Inclosed: I transmit for your information a Copy of a Letter from the Secretary of War, dated the 21^st; and of the Answer to its contents, addressed to the President on the 22^d instant: Relatively to a Treaty with the Six nations; which is proposed to be held on the 15^th of September next. As the President has a assurance, that the Interests of this Union are essentially involved in the Suspension of our Presqu'isle Establishment; and it is expected that this Treaty will obviate the material Obstacles to that measure; I have considered it to mark this event. I have no Authority to appoint a Commissioner to attend on behalf of Pennsylvania; but the object of the Treaty is so intimately connected with your trust, that I think it proper to Request, that you, or one of you, will repair to the place of meeting at the time prescribed; and pay particular attention to whatever passes in relation to the Rights of Pennsylvania, without interfering as parties to the Treaty. If the issue is favourable to our object at Presqu'isle, you will immediately proceed to Execute the duties of your Commission; but if the Indians should continue to menace opposition, you will wait for a further communication from me. — In either event, Capt. Denny, will hold his detachment in Readiness Readiness to Act for your protection & defence; and you will take every opportunity of giving me full information of your proceedings. — It will afford me some Satisfaction to be informed, what in your Judgment is the latest period of the present year, which will admit of prosecuting the Surveys at Presqu'isle. . . .
