Dissatisfaction with Arrangements Surrounding Settlement at Presqu'ile
Document 1794Mifflin writes that he is transmitting all documents pertaining to Pennsylvania's title to land supposedly bought from the Six nations, for use in upcoming negotiations in a dispute over the same. Disagrees with the timing proposed by Knox for the treaty and surveying of the settlement site, saying the time needed for communication and surveying will preclude settlers from reaching the site before May 1, which is the deadline for bounties for establishing settlements. Mentions that he could ask for an earlier treaty date, but instead says he will try to hold the surveyors in readiness to immediately commence their work once the treaty is completed, as long as the treaty is favorable to Pennsylvania's aims. If it is not, states that he will insist upon the military aid of the U.S. to press the rights of Pennsylvania.
