Sir,
I herewith enclose Mrs Pike's rect for the forty Dollars which I brought with me for her from Philadelphia. You will find another rect for forty Dollars more, which I must request you to transmit by the first mail, as she has convinced me that she needs this further payment in order to extricate herself from the embarrassments which various small demands upon her occasion. She called upon me this morning, & urged me to state her necessitous situation in its true colors. With five children dependent upon her for subsistence, she says she was obliged, in order to clothe & feed them, to contract debts in Rahway which will entirely absorb these forty Dollars also. Agreeably to her calculation there must be about 100 Dollars due her, which perhaps it would be best to transmit at once, if I will obtain from her a receipt for whatever it exceeds the sum contained in the one enclosed.
I have taken the liberty to make out & enclose two powers of Attorney in your name, authorizing you to receive at the bank the Interest due to General Dayton & myself up to the 1st of this month. Be so obliging as to do this business immediately, & procure from the N. S. Bank a draft upon the Branch bank in New York payable to me or my order, for the whole sum, & enclose it to me in this place. It will be safest to conduct in the same manner with the advance for Mrs Pike.
I am Sir with regard
Yours
