[Georgetown July 2.] The President of the United States Now at Mount Vernon [[undecipherable] notation] Annapolis June 27^th 1794 Cap^tn Alexander Murray a native of this State, I understand has applied to you for a command in the Navy, and as he served as a Cap^tn in the 1^st Maryland Regiment under my command, I cou'd not withstand the solicitations of his numerous & most res-putable connexions here to mention to you that whilst he was under my command he distinguished himself as a brave and active officer of unexceptionable character and deportment, and as a soldier I cou'd not hesitate to recommend him in the strongest terms — as to his nautical talents I am not able to judge of them. he has, however, commanded several Sloops before and in the last war — with every sentiment of respect I have the honor to a[ddress] you Y^r mo.
