I have taken a general view of your accounts and I find that in the recruiting account of Ensign Levi McLane a lumping charge is made for bounty and premium of the principal number of his recruits their names, dates of enlistments, if mustered, if deserted &c is not mentioned and in the recruiting account of Captain Sparks the dates of enlistments and of mustered, deserted &c is wanting, and the like deficiency appears on Ensign Purdys account, as well as the receipts for bounties and contingent expenses of the whole, it is therefore impossible for me to act upon your accounts in their present state; it will be necessary for you to forward the enlistments and the receipts, and if you have any duplicate musters or can inform where the recruits have been mustered, I wish you to furnish me such information. and in the mean time for you to write the Pay master to know if he has, and how he may stop the money you advanced Captain [undecipherable] Stork on account of their pay, whether deducted from their pay in the rolls or stopped in cash — I am sensible Sir of the justice of your charges, but I cannot pass them without such vouchers as will be required at the Treasury department where my settlements are subject to revision. — I return you Sergeant George Wohabs account, you are the last judge of its propriety but if paid I think the name of the deserter if apprehended should be mentioned in order that the charge may be deducted from their pay.
