[27 May 1794 Hon^ble Wm Knox Murray recommends Allen Murray Cmde Henry Knox Esq^r Secretary at War] Th: Union S^t 25 May 1794 Dear Sir, In justice to Captain Murray's merits I can not withold a remark or two — I have long & intimately Known him & declare I Know not a more amiable or honourable private Charac: ter — He is a modest, delicate, gentlemen brave man; very correct & gentlemanlike in his deportment and virtuous in his conduct — If it prove consistent with the outline of design meditated by the [undecipherable] to appoint him I do believe he will do credit to the American flag as a brave man — and an officer in whose discretion might be trusted so important a duty as that that flows from the command of a Frigate.
