Knoxville 4 April 1794 William Rickard - Letter Knoxville April 4th 1794 Sir Early in the Morning of the third of April A Party of Indians Twenty five in number attacked the Block House at the mouth of Town Creek command’d by Serjeant. Harrod of the 12th Company of Infantry 3. Sub Legion U. States. And upon a Soldier stepping out William Green was Fired upon and Killed and immediately rushed for the Door of the Block House but were so warmly opposed they presently found it convenient to retreat leaving behind them One Rifle, One Scalping Knife, One Blanket, One Cappoe, One Breech Clout, Eight Ramrods, and several Gun Cock Covers. A Fellow attempting to scalp Green received a Ball fired by Serjeant Harrod through his hand which induced him to drop his Rifle & Scalping Knife this appeared by his shaking his hand and wrapping it up with his Match Coat, and by the place where the Ball struck the Rifle stock and the Blood upon it Three other Indians were wounded one it is beleived mortally as he fell within a hundred paces paces of the Block House and made lamentable Screams according to their Custom. Bled very freely and was carried off by his Party Inclosed are the Muster Rolls, Inspection and Provision returns for the Month of April 1794 ~ The return of Greens effects cannot be forwarded untill the next month.
