[Sec. of War 1794 March 24^th] War Department, March 24^th 1794. Sir. Colonel Parker has recommended M^r Daniel Bedinger of Norfolk as a proper person to have new carriages made for the cannon at that place. If you should be of opinion that M^r Bedinger would be a proper person, I pray you to cause the inclosed letter to be given to him placing his name therein. If not, that you would appoint some other more suitable person for the purpose. If you should not readily know of a proper person, it is probable that Colonel Farrington might recommend one to you. Whether the cannon are the property of Virginia or of the United States, it is probable they may be for the present appropriated to the defence of Norfolk— One hundred 32 Pounders, are intended to be cast. A proportion of which may if those at Norfolk are not of sufficient calibre be transported to that place. Proper arrangements will also be made for the transportation of shot and ammunition for this cannon at Norfolk.— Captain Hannah will be ordered to embark at Alexandria with his recruits, and proceed to Norfolk, as soon as the Secretary of the Treasury shall make arrangements with some person at that place, to furnish the necessary supplies of provision &c. for the troops— The case of Alexandria is not considered so pressing as that of Norfolk— But cannon which are now at the Head of Elk will be transported to the former place as soon as the carriages shall be made for them.
