Sir
Your favor of the 14 Ultimo has been received and submitted to the President of the United States. The information and suggestions therein contained are candidly and thankfully received, and being under consideration the result will soon be transmitted to your Excellency.
In the mean time upon the application of the Senators of the State of Georgia the commanding Officer has been directed to establish small garrisons at the following places to wit—
A post at Doctors creek eleven miles from the settlement of Midway on the leading road to Beards bluff, the paths from the different crossing places on the Alatamaha above St Savilla and below Beards bluff all into the leading road at this place — this post will serve to alarm the settlements and for a place of rendezvous for the Militia, as well as a support to the post at Beards bluff in case of attack — it is the spot pointed out by the Inhabitants of Midway as best situated to cover that valuable settlement —
A post at Saint Savilla on the South side of the River Alatamaha, this is a principal crossing place for Indians intending attacks on the settlements of South Newport and Sapelo, as well as the plantations on the south banks of that river and of consequence covers that part of the country.
A post at or near Bartrups old Cowpen on the head of Turtle river this post covers the settlers on the two necks of land one between the Alatamaha and Turtle river and the other between the latter river and the river Shattla — it besides secures a line of communication between Saint Marys and the Alatamaha — these three posts are nearly on a line with each other —
It is to be hoped that this arrangement will be conformable to your views —
I have the honor to be
with great respect
Your obediant Servant
H Knox
