Princeton, Jany 16th 1794
Dear Sir,
I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 11th Inst & in answer to it will inform you (but only from recollection) so far certain, that I never recd the money you speak of, but recollect perfectly that I assisted Genl Butler in paying it out. Taking the mens receipts in his own Name, & I think there were three Months pay in Notes of one in Species, for I recollect his giving the Men Checks on Mr Hough for the Specie, & it appears to me that Mr Hough had something to do with the transaction. — It is very certain to me that Genl Butler is responsible (if he has not already done it) for that money, & I know he was extremely particular in taking the mens receipts, & if I do not mistake, they were taken in as blank bound Book, & I rather think the money came through Mr Hough, perhaps from Mr Carleton of the War Department.
I have the honor to be
Sir, with respect to him,
Your Obt Servant
