[To Major Gen. Knox, Secy of war] № 69. Head Quarters Greenville 8. Jan.^y 1794.- Sir, I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your several letters of the 25^th & 29^th of November & 7^th of December 1793. with their respective enclosures; to which particular & due attention has and shall be paid Enclosed are the Returns & estimates of the articles actually wanted in the Quartermaster Generals, the Ordnance & Hospital departments for 1794. - The Returns for the last quarter of articles received, issued & on hand are incomplete, except in the Ordnance Department; those of the Quartermaster General will be forwarded from Fort Washington and those of the Hospital will be made out & forwarded by the next opportunity. - I also transmit a General Return of the Legion; and of the number of men whose term of enlistment will expire on or before the 31. of May next, together with the vacancies that have taken place since the list of promotions & organization that I had the honor of transmitting on the 17^th. of Sept. last, those promotions & arrangements, I was induced to make from the causes therein mentioned as well as from the following paragraph contained in your letter of the 13. April 1793. - Viz - "I conceive in case of all vacancies the Officers clearly entitled to those vacancies are to fill them as soon as they occur, but it ought to be well settled that the successors are clearly entitled." - The four appointments, [strikethrough: viz] Ensigns Dangerfield & Boyd & Cornets Porey & Blue I could not well resist from the circumstance of their being acting active Cadets with the Legion at a period when we were in extreme want of Subalteen Officers, as well as from their character as Gentlemen & their connections in the Legion. - one of them, Mr. Boyd, is now no more - he fell gallantly in Lowsey's affair, after killing the principal Savage Chief with his own hand. - I have nominated Major John Mills Adjutant & Inspector General, and put him into the duties of his Office on the 7^th. of December 1793. - in obedience to your letter of the 27^th of July last. I have approved of the sentence of the General Court Martial, whereof Brig. Gen. Thomas Posey was President held upon Ensign Morgan; and return the proceedings assigned in Court by the President & Judge Advocate pro tem, to be filed in your office. - upon enquiry I find that the rough minutes, which are also signed by the President & Judge Advocate are deposited at Fort Washington among my other official papers and therefore cannot at present be sent forward, but shall be transmitted as soon as circumstances will permit. - The letters of the Secretary of the Treasury & the Comptroller General have been put into the hands of Mr. Swan, the Pay-Master Gen.^t of the Legion; who I believe will be able to render a satisfactory account of the transaction objected to or complained of. - the enclosed correspondence between the Contractors & myself has or will produce the desired effect tho' at a late hour I have also the honor to enclose a copy of my letter to His Excellency the Governor of Kentucky upon the subject of the pending expedition against the Spanish possessions on the Mississippi. - Permit me now Sir, to inform you that on the 23^d. ultimo, Major Henry Burbeck marched from this place with eight Companies of foot & a detachment of Artillery, with Orders to possess the Field of action of the 11^th. Nov.^r 1791 and there to fortify: which proves to be on [strikethrough: the] main branch of the Wabash; and not on the St. Mary's as heretofore understood]. - this being an object of consequence to our future operations; as well as to afford an additional security to the western frontiers at a crisis, when from the most certain and recent intelligence the Savages were a second time collected or collecting in force at Au Glaize and would more than probably dispute the occupancy of a favorite ground: wishing therefore to give countenance to the operation I thought proper to advance with a small reinforcement of mounted Infantry, accompanied by the Officers mentioned in the enclosed extract from the General Orders of the 28^th of December, to which I must beg leave to refer you for a detail of this manoeuvre. - Fort Recovery! is now furnished with a sufficient Garrison, well provided with ammunition, Artillery & Provision, commanded by an Officer / Cap.^t Gibsons who will not betray the trust reposed in him. - on the 2. instant, Mr. Collins a D. Q^r. Master with a Sergeant, Cap.^t & 12 privates of Cap.^t Eatons Company, who were sent to reconnoitre a position between this place and Au Glaize, preparatory to future operations came in sudden contact with a considerable Indian encampment, which they deemed less dangerous to attack, than to attempt a retreat after being discovered: the result was the loss of three brave privates killed on the spot upon our part & five warriors upon theirs; when this gallant little party, seeing themselves outnumbered thought proper to fall back - the Enemy, probably sore from the rencontre did not find it expedient to pursue. - the remainder of this small party arrived in Camp in the course of the next day, one of them slightly wounded and the clothing of most of the others perforated by rifle balls. - I have since ordered out another Detachment under Cap.^t Eaton to complete the business upon which Mr. Collins was sent and expect his return in the course of two or three days with some interesting information. - I have the honor to be with sincere Esteem your most ded.^t Very Hum.^t Servant A Wayne [the Hon.^ble / Mai.
