Sir, Bear Hall Aug 5th 1794
Your favour of the 6 by Dunbar I have to acknowledge, Together with a form of a Muster Roll. I had Received the most of last years Rolls before I knew [undecipherable], therefore I have Sent all the Rolls on for last year agreeable to the old form, and Shall begin the next year with the form you Sent me an It appears to me the form you have Sent me is intended for a Company in a Regiment, or Batt in Service by the Commanding Officer being included in the Caption of the Roll, if there are two Columns for names persons, which Takes up a great deal of Paper which if the Column of Remarks would answer, it would be very favourable for this place where paper is to Scarce you know but what must be done in that case, & the Rolls Shall go forward to you agreeable to your form and if I Receive one from you by the Next Chance which you may think will answer better [strikethrough: [undecipherable]] I Shall attend to the [undecipherable] ony of the men as well as I possibly can, as a Troop or Company are generally formed from the three Counties would it not answer for me when with the Majority of the Company live there in the other County, Retained on Command at Such a place as was the Case last war as parts of Companies was not Moved as I cannot See them all the Same day —
or Shall I be Obliged to go to the other County and Muster them as usual the Next day. I Shall continue to do So now. I hear from you — if you have heard from the Secretary of War Respecting the pay, annexed to my appointment, I would be happy to hear what it is & do you [undecipherable] Send me one by do.
If I have a little of the [undecipherable: probable reading "Needfull"] I would be Very glad as I am Obliged to lay out Considerable in my Rising a band, I have heard Cash is Scarce in Knoxville but Bills of exchange will answer in this District Equal to the Cash —
I have the Honour Sir to be
