I observe by your letter of the 13th Ultt. that you do not take the meaning of my letter of 3d. Ultt. respecting Mr. Milton Semples business. It is intended that a pay Roll of Capt. Crawford's detachment shall be made out shewing the balances due, the amount of which being remitted to you to be placed in the hands of the paymaster of that detachment; the Officer whose dept. Mr. Semple has run to the amount, and in the hands of the paymaster, subject to Mr. Semples demand; but the balances as appear on the rolls must be receipted for in full so that those drafts may not appear as vouchers to the accounts of the paymaster, which would be utterly inadmissible — It will be seen therefore that this matter cannot be taken up officially & the accomodation proposed as a means of accomodation in order to reimburse Mr. Semple. I regret that it is not proper for me to arrange the business to his perfect satisfaction. I am Sir Your obdt. Hble
