Henry Lee on the 1st of Oct. 1793 from the [undecipherable] Copy of a Letter from the Secretary of War to Thomas Holt. dated Elizabeth Town New Jersey October 1. 1793 Sir I have this instant received your letter of the 19th [indecipherable] If the information you have transmitted be founded, it will be your duty to call in the name of the United States upon the nearest commanding officer of the militia for adequate guard to protect the stores or in case they could not be defended where they are, to remove them to a place of perfect security, It will also be necessary that you apply to the Governor of the State, to whom I have written requesting the necessary protection I am [indecipherable] (signed) Henry Knox Copy of a letter from the Secretary of War to the Governor of Virginia, dated Elizabeth Town New Jersey October 1. 1793 Sir Captain Thomas Holt, who has the charge of the small magazine of the United States at New London in Virginia, has informed me by letter dated 19 [indecipherable] that certain indications were discovered of the intention of some of the negroes to rise in rebellion. as I have this moment received this letter, I know not what degree of credit to give to so extraordinary information, But, at any event Sir permit me to place the stores of the United States at the above place and at manchester under your protection, and to assure you that every expence paid for guards or other security will be paid by the United States.
