Know all men by these presents that we James Marshall of the Town & County of Washington in the State of Pennsylvania and Andrew Kennedy & Co. of the City of Philadelphia State Aforesaid Merchants
are held and firmly bound unto the Secretary of the department of War for the time being in behalf of the united States of America in the Sum of Two Thousand Dollars, for which payment well and truly to be made, we bind Ourselves, our Heirs Executors Administrators & Assigns firmly by these presents: Sealed with our Seals in the City of Philadelphia this thirteenth day of May One thousand Seven Hundred and Eighty One
The Condition of the above Obligation is such, that whereas the first named of the above bounden, James Marshall has Received this day from Samuel Hodgdon Quarter Master the Sum of two thousand five hundred Dollars, for the purpose of purchasing Horses, agreeably to certain instructions, having this date, and annexed to these presents.
Now if the said James Marshall shall well & faithfully appropriate the said sum of two thousand five hundred Dollars agreeably to the instructions before mentioned, & shall have rendered a true and faithful account thereof supported with proper Vouchers on or before the first day of August next to the said Samuel Hodgdon Quarter Master, then this Obligation to be void, otherwise to remain in full force and virtue —
