Sir, The President of the United States, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, has appointed you to be a Commissioner to treat with the hostile Indians North of the Ohio. This treaty is proposed to be at Sandusky river, near Lake Erie, the ensuing Spring. The other commissioners are Beverly Randolph Esq^r, late Governor of Virginia, and Colonel Pickering of this State; and it will be necessary that all the commissioners should be assembled in this city, on the first of April, in order to prepare themselves for their mission. I enclose you the Act of Congress, specifying the rate of compensation to the commissioners. I request you will inform me, as soon as possible, of your acceptance or non acceptance of this appointment.
