No 162
Sir.
By your letter of the 6th ultimo, you informed me, that William Wilson, an interpreter of the the [strikethrough: Mingo] Delaware tongues, had agreed to attend the commissioners appointed to treat with the hostile Indians at Sandusky, and that he would be in this city, about the 18th of the same month. He has not yet arrived, nor have I heard a word about him.
The commissioners have commenced their journey, and will rendezvous at Niagara. It is of great importance to their mission, that Mr Wilson should be there without a moments delay. If he has not already left Pittsburg, for this city, and is willing to attend the commissioners, I request that you will deliver the enclosed letter to him, which directs that he repairs by the most Buffalo Creek & certain and safe route to Niagara.
It is probable he may want an advance of money. In that case, I request that you will furnish him with a sum of money sufficient to defray his expenses, and draw a bill on me for the same, which shall be immediately paid.
I pray you to use every endeavor in your power, to urge Mr Wilson to go forward, and inform me by the first opportunity, the result.
If it is impossible to get Mr Wilson to go forward, I pray you to get some other person who may be relied upon. I think that I have heard that [strikethrough: Joseph Nicholson] understands the Shawanese tongue better than he does that of the Sinekas — I pray you to consider the request I make of the highest importance, and that you exert yourself to obtain one or two persons, whose integrity may be relied on, skilled in the Shawange and Delaware tongues, to repair immediately to Buffalo Creek and Niagara. They shall be liberally paid for their trouble, and let me know the result.
I am Sir,
Your very humble Servt
H Knox
Major Craig.
