Description

Letter from James Seagrove Indian Agent to Creek Nation at St Marys. Seagrove refers to last time they met in November with hopeful prospects for peace that has been broken by unprovoked murder and robbery by Creeks against peaceful inhabitants of United States. Reports that on 11 March 1793 about twenty-five to thirty Creeks entered store of Robert Seagrove at Traders Hill on St Marys River, and murdered Mr John Heming storekeeper, and Mr Daniel Moffet, scalped and tomahawked them, beat and abused others, and robbed the store of everything to upwards of ten thousand dollars. Next day three men and a girl were killed near Colerain by Creeks; inoffensive travelers. Seagrove expresses disbelief that Creeks would do something like this. If the chiefs want peace, Seagrove says they must hand over the murderers or vengeance will shower the nation. The United States wants peace; describes shameful ingratitude to generous benefactor found in President of United States. Accuses John Galphin as accomplice in business and if so deserves no mercy. Says the murders came from Burgess's town and that Burgess's son and brother in law were leaders of the party. Tells the chiefs to find the rest. Seagrove demands answer within 25 days
