War department March 16 1793 Sir I have understood that a man resides at Fort Pitt, who was an excellent interpreter of the Shawanese Tongue – and perhaps also of the Delaware. the name M. Hodgdon forgets, but says he serves as a pilot to Boats going down the Ohio. I pray you to enquire out this man, and if he should be a master of the Shawanese and Delaware tongues or either of them and otherwise a man of good character and faithful to the United States – I request that you would send him to me, provided he should be willing to be employed as Interpreter under the Commissioners who are to hold the treaty with the hostile Indians at Sandusky in the ensuing spring – It will be necessary he should be in this City early in April – I am Sir Your humble Servant KNOX Major Isaac Craig
