War department March 1st 1793
Sir,
I have directed the accountant of the war department to forward to you by the Honble. Andrew Moore, pay for yourself, Lieutenant John Bouyer and Robert Craig, and Ensigns Gray and Franklin, up to the 1 January last, amounting to three hundred and three Dollars &c. He has also in charge the sum of two hundred and thirty one Dollars being one months pay for your recruits — the accountant will instruct you as to the mode of paying the same. As soon as you shall have received these sums, you will immediately prepare all the recruits at the rendezvous for marching; as well as those which may have been recruited by any of the Subaltern officers in your quarter, you will proceed by the most direct route to Point Pleasant the mouth of the Great Kenehwa. Lieutenants Bouyer and Craig, and Ensigns Gray and Franklin must march with you. ——————————————
The sum of fifty Dollars to defray the contingent expences of your march is also forwarded to you by this conveyance.
The Contractor is to furnish the means of transportation for the baggage &c. of your detachment.
You will inform me of the time when you shall set out, and I pray that there may be no unnecessary delay.
On your arrival at Point Pleasant, you will receive further orders from Major General Wayne.
It is presumed you must have received your arms and accoutrements before this time, as they have been forwarded sometime ago, to Col Carrington at Richmond, who promised to Send them to your rendezvous —.
You will muster and [underline: inspect] your recruits and make out triplicate Muster and Pay Rolls — one of each you will retain in your possession, and transmit the duplicates to this office.
Sam Sir,
with esteem,
Your very humble Serv
[signature]
Captain William Preston.
