Accountability for Legion Stores & Pay, Recruitment Issues
Document 1793Knox requests that all articles and stores sent to the Legion be strictly accounted for. This should not take time from training the marksmen but strict accountability of public property is very important. Recruiters should know that adding new men to the Legion is solely their responsibility because no additional pay is forthcoming.

Sir,
I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your favor of the 18th instant with an Estimate of Ordnance Stores from Major Burbeck and your correspondence with Major Beatty.
Instead of Red Jacket of the Senecas; the Farmers brother, the young King, the infant [undecipherable: gorget?], breastplate, and two inferiors have arrived here in consequence of the invitation forwarded some time ago. Their information when fully obtained shall at as [undecipherable: early?] a period be laid before you.
The articles and stores requested by Major Burbeck shall be forwarded — but I request you will be pleased to order the account on hand at Legionville to be transmitted, as well as the quantity which has been expended and the manner how by these [undecipherable: remarks?] it is not intended that you should check the indispensibly necessary discipline of making your men marksmen, but in order that there may be a due accounting for public property of every Species.
I have not yet been favored with your private letter of the 15th instant — when it arrives the additional howitzers will be considered — there are two now ready for transportation and they shall be forwarded immediately. I hope either to create an opportunity, or find a safe one in a few days to transmit the remainder of the money to complete the Pay of the Army for the first year.
I have written circular letters to the officers at the recruiting Rendezvous, urging them to the highest exertions in the recruiting service.
