War Department Accountants Office Jan^y 25. 1793 Sir I have rec'd your letter of the 18 Inst — [strikethrough: I now] enclose pay rolle of Cap^t Slough's detachment taken to the 1^st Inst. in order that you may be enabled to discharge the balance of 56.60⁹⁰ due thereon — It is has been usual in Settling acco^ts of pay, if a person entered the Service after the 9^th of a month & [strikethrough: left] prior to the end of some Subsequent month to allow [strikethrough: the 30 day] in both months, this method of calculation [strikethrough: seems] to be contrary to the [strikethrough: System] practice at the Treasury Department which is to calculate from the day of entering Service to the [strikethrough: same] date in any Subsequent month without regard to a month's having more than 30 days — as from the [strikethrough: the] 10 Jan^y to the 10^th of Feb^y is one month ⅔ on but the day of discharge is to be allowed to that a man [strikethrough: has] entering the 10 of Jan^y & being discharg'd the 10 of Feb^y would be entitled to a month [strikethrough: one day] pay — as acco^ts of this department are Subject to decision at the Treasury I have to request that in making up the Pay role the practice at the the Treasury may prevail — I also enclose the continuation of the list of Warr^t [undecipherable] & charges for apprehending & punishing deserters by officers from the arising from Settlement of Officer accounts to the present date — and of charges against Sundry Officers from 19 Inst to this date in continuation — The [undecipherable] to Officers of for any particular purpose is expressed in the Schedule, you [strikethrough: fell] to a certain day.
