[Docket: A. Hamilton; Secretary of the Treasury; January 26, 1793; Inspector of Clothing; Hats — precautions for preservation]
Treasury Department January 26 1793
Sir,
I send you a letter of this day from Mr Miller, Inspector of Cloathing, suggesting the necessity of certain precautions for the preservation of the Hats which have been delivered; you will be fully sensible of the importance of due care on this point, and will I doubt not give the necessary direction to Mr Hodgdon.
I have the honour to be, very Respectfully, Sir,
Your Obedient Servt
(Signed) A. Hamilton.
The Secretary at War
Philadelphia 24 January 1793
Sir,
Since I had the honor of addressing you a few days ago, all the Hats at present finished have been inspected and are now delivering at the public Store to the Amount of 1500. As there is no place fixed for their Reception otherwise than in bulk on the Floor, and no article is more liable to damage from the Mouth than a wool hat. I cannot but regret that these, which are undoubtedly the best parcel that ever were made for the army, Should be put in this danger the only mode I can Suggest is to have them well pack'd in cases in dry Casks and shut up; before the dust collects on them. Some directions may be necessary to Colo Hodgdon on this Subject. Although this is out of my province, yet I could not refrain from the communication of my ideas viewing the interest of the [undecipherable] Sol-dier; and the credit of the inspection involvs'd therein. With perfect respect,
I am,
Sir
Your Most Obedt. Servt
