Sir
I have considered your letter of the 12 instant, and also the estimate which was presented upon the subject.
It is conceived that occasions may arise in which it will be in-dispensible to feed certain Indians and also to furnish them with ammu-nition. But while this power be used with great prudence, it will be im-portant, that it be not abused.
Your estimate on this head has been complied with, and one hundred and forty two dollars and fifty Cents have been furnished you on the Score of Provisions, and Two hundred pounds of Powder, Four hundred pounds of Lead and Two hundred Flints on that of Ammunition which includes all you have required.
Your Estimate of articles for the families of the Indians gone to the Westward and for certain presents to them on their return has been also complied with, and the Secretary of the Treasury has directed the goods to be purchased in New York amounting to Six hundred and thirty seven Dollars and Sixty eight Cents —
