[Letter from Gen^l Knox Oct. 14. 92 Oct 14^th X X X] War department October 14 1792 Sir The President of the United States to whom I have submitted your Excellency's letter of the 4 instant, has directed me to inform you, that from his present view of the subject he does not conceive any measures on the part of the Legislature of Virginia necessary for the defence of the frontiers during the ensuing Year. That he flatters himself the respectable force authorized by Congress during their late session, together with the Militia which the laws authorize him to call into service, will prove adequate to the occasions which may arise. He has farther desired me to tender you his thanks for your ideas relatively to the Block Houses for the purpose of cutting off the communication between the Northern and Southern Indians, which he will take into his consideration — and he requests you would be pleased from time to time to transmit such further ideas as may occur to you to be important either respecting a defensive or offensive War with the Indians.
