Your favor of the 29^th ult^o I had the honor to recieve last evening — The offer which You have obligingly made me of being Adj. Gen^l. to the army, and the polite manner in which You have expressed it, are extremely flattering to me and afford a fresh proof of your friendship & favor. At present my views are so detached from military pursuits, that an Appointment in that line would be in no degree desireable; I must however beg your acceptance of my grateful acknowledgement of your very friendly offer, at the same time that I am constrained to decline accepting the Appointment — I am D^r.
