Would it be agreable to you, to accept the offer of adjutant general and inspector of the western army, on the pay and emoluments of a lieutenant colonel?— Colonel Sargent has declined.— By some error, the law does not authorize the rank, but I am persuaded that this point will be rectified the next session of Congress, [underline: and the rank of Lt Col established] to take effect from the time of acceptance. If the idea should be acceptable, I pray you to repair to this city as soon as may be; if it should not, I pray your prompt and explicit answer; in order to insure which, I have directed, understanding you are on a tour of reviewing the militia, that this letter be forwarded to you by express.
