Philadelphia 25 Aug 1792 Having pretty generally got on the Clothing for the Army — it seems necessary to give you such information as will insure a prompt and accurate Disposition of it — for this purpose I enclose the Schedule that relates to the business — you will observe that all the Clothing for the [United States] Reg[iment] is marked for, and consigned to the Pay Master of the Regiment at [undecipherable: Kingston?] — the regiment being there — Below the first accounts for the [undecipherable] Commanding Officer of the Regiment who receives from me an account of the whole forwarded for his regiment [and] you will forward the necessary Documents to account for your Shipments at [undecipherable: Philadelphia?] — The Clothing of the [United States] Reg[iment] Regiment is sent on by Companies to the address of the respective Captain Commanding Officers — This became [necessary] on account of their dispersed situation — But the Commanding Officer of the Regiment also be furnished with a general account of every thing sent on for his command — The Schedule will shew you the Contents of each Box, or Cover — and assist you in the proper Distribution of the whole — and will shew you the exact Differences to be taken from the Boxes forwarded for the purpose — The [statement] supposes a Deficiency of 120 Blank [undecipherable] will go from hence in a day or two — but discovers a surplus of these, equal to 320 Pairs — which will be disposed of as after proper orders [given] — I am awaiting for your vouchers to compleat your accounts, as mine cannot be rendered [and] [I] receive yours — in my last I informed you I am made accountable for all the Money you have received, of course all your Documents will come to me — you mention M^r Read as [undecipherable] — and the Pay allowed him by me — you must have forgot that the sum inserted in your own Letter relative to his pay was the same — and I admitted — take the [Extract] of your Letter thus — "By agreement M^r [undecipherable] had [undecipherable] Shillings per day, and [bread] (which [supposed] a ration) and [to] keep the same" — if however you now think it insufficient, put it into the [Estimate] that you are shortly to make, as what you think right, and I will endeavour to have it allowed — The [undecipherable] — and the Sugar you require will be in this way, on Monday or Tuesday next — Make my respects to M^r Craig and all the family — and believe me [to be] being sincerely your friend and most Obedient Humble Servant Samuel Hodgdon The Letters that came with this to the address of the Commanding Officers of Regiments covering Invoices of Clothing forwarded for their commands, you will send on as quick as possible that they may [know] the true State of the business — they are sent unsealed that you may see and act in concert with the mode adopted, that no mistake or [Detention] may [happen] — [You] will carefully seal the Letters when you send them forward.
