[No 151] To Genl Knox Sect of war
Pittsburgh 26 august 1792.
Sir, After closing my letter of this date No 14 I was favor'd with yours of the 17 instant with enclosures, to all which due attention shall be paid —
Yesterday Capt Mellis and Capt Ballard Smiths detachments arrived at this place. I have not yet received their particular reports — but send you the morning of yesterday and this day, by which you'll see our total strength and numbers. —
An Express has this moment arrived by the way of the wilderness from Fort Washington, with copies of the same letters that you transmitted me by this & the last post, I however enclose the whole as I received them — also an invoice of such articles, mentioned in the invoices from the 1st of January to the 1st of July as had not come to hand on the 20th instant.
The water of the Ohio is too low for navigation, but I hope it will not long be the case.
I find that the Southern Indians are rather hostilely inclined, by Colo Campbells letter — if the Legion was once complete, and augmented by four more troops of Dragoons — I would feel a confidence in meeting the whole combined force of the Savages by the months of June or July next — their numbers would only tend to confuse them and they would become an easy prey to our Cavalry, after being retired by the Bayonet, their bare heels would invite the fall of the Saber. I am of opinion we have more to apprehend from a temporizing peace, than from the most active Indian War —
I am Sir, your most ob't
hum Servt Anty Wayne
